MILL TOUR - SAWMILL & PLANING MILL
Built in the late 1970s by father and son, Edwin and Keith Blaikie, this electrically powered sawmill operated until early 2000s. It was built on the site of Blaikie Bros' sawmill that operated in the village of Upper Stewiacke from the early 1900s through to the 1960s.
Edwin Blaikie Lumber's sawmill has sat idle ever since its closure with the exception of a few specialty projects where Keith would run a few logs through the mill.
The planing mill was used up until 2024 for core tray production. Coretrays are wooden boxes with channels that run the length of the board that are used to store core samples drilled by drilling companies in the mining and geotechnical industries.
